A Noob's Diary About Watches

The Timex Marlin 34mm Nobody’s Talking About – Timex Marlin 34mm Hand Wind 1960s Reissue

The Timex Marlin 34mm Hand Wind 1960s Reissue is a watch which I got to say is currently my favourite now in the diameter size category. Why is this so? I will share my opinions on it next up. This is just a simple Timex Marlin 34mm review after owning it for close to a year.

The one that I have with me, shown here, is the Timex Marlin 34mm in gold colour. There are other colour variations out there but I only managed to get my hands on this yellow gold colour and I’ve not looked back since (Just nice I’m a fan of gold coloured too!)

To give a little quick background of this watch – this is the reissue of the original Timex watch of the same name, the Marlin and the same diameter size of 34mm. I’m not sure but I think back then it was only available in one colour and that is the silver dial with black hands.

The watch sports a silver dial with gold Arabic numeral markers only at even hours 2, 4, 6 ,8 10 and 12. Of course, this watch doesn’t have any lume. The hands are also in gold colour and bear in mind this is PVD gold and not 14k yellow gold or such…the price already indicates so. There is no day or date display so if you are the type who likes to have such indicators on a watch then this is not for you.

The case is made of stainless steel with the bezel in PVD yellow gold well. To be honest, I like the simple bezel design but probably in gold and not just stainless steel colour. The gold makes it less boring compared to the silver dial-black hand version. The case subtlely tapers to the side and tapers down towards the back of the watch. Okay, it does not look like a UFO haha!

Case diameter is at 34mm, case thickness of 10mm with lug width of 18mm. This is truly a gentleman’s watch, the watch from 1960s era. Not too big like you see nowadays, just screams subtle class not gonna lie. If you want to change out the original strap, there are easy-to-access drilled lug holes for easy swapping.

Of course such casing is fully polished including the closed caseback at the back of the watch, where you can find the word “Timex” and the water resistance of 30m engraved into it. The Tang buckle is polished, in PVD gold with the word “Timex” on it.

The crystal of this Timex Marlin 34mm Hand Wind 1960s Reissue watch is acrylic and I feel it is domed just right and not too much in my opinion.

The crown is not too small for me, I find that winding the watch is a breeze but those with big hands really may have difficulty winding it…oh yes, this is a mechanical winding watch. Don’t worry about over-winding because the winding is really so smooth you can tell if the winding has reached the end. I know, the crown looks flushed with the bezel but really lah, not difficult and easy to access.

The power reserve I didn’t go and count or observe but it was still moving on the 2nd day I took the watch off my wrist. Remember, this is hand winding and I wind before heading to work and knocking off.

When I was wearing this, I observed the time to be somewhat accurate to my iPhone. I do not have a timegrapher but I can tell you, it is not super inaccurate of having 40 seconds of time loss per day that level. It definitely keeps time well.

It is also easy to wear and comfortable, all because of the size and definitely the weight it does not feel like a brick on the wrist. The leather strap is pretty long with sufficient holes that I think should fit all wrist sizes. My wrist size is 16.25cm. Totally suits any occasion especially like with formal wear but casual like T-shirt and jeans pair up fine as well. My personal opinion for this is, I wouldn’t wear for occasions I will perspire a lot.

With enough care, this watch will definitely last a long time but this is subjective.

In summary, I find the Timex Marlin 34mm Hand Wind 1960s Reissue watch is a damn classy watch to wear, very gentleman kind of watch that screams “special” in a crowd of Seikos, Cartiers and Rolexes. Although there are other colour variations available, I still like this gold-coloured version. It isn’t loud, not like an old uncle’s watch and some angle it does look a bit like Glashutte Original Sixties watch and the legibility is unbelievable despite gold colour against silver. The domed acrylic crystal gives a retro look as it should like in the 60’s. Simple, yet elegant so if you are looking for gentleman’s watch to wear with a brand that has a rich history in Horology, the Timex Marlin 34mm Hand Wind 1960s Reissue watch you should definitely check it out.

This is just a hobby blog of the watches that I have come across – meaning owned, tried wearing them and then just give a few cents here and there about them. All in plain simple English with no complicated horology jargons.

Maybe, just maybe, giving some bitching opinions on watches around too lah haha! See how but yes, priority content will still be those that I’ve physically encounter.

Oh before I forgot – this is not a watch blogshop and I’m not selling any watches here. Hope you find the content here useful lah!
